  17. <p>    A sword cracked at the wrong time, and one singer nearly
  18. tripped while running across the stage. But last week critics
  19. were hailing Luciano Pavarotti's directorial debut at Venice's
  20. Teatro La Fenice in Gaetano Donizetti's difficult opera La
  21. Favorita. Originally invited to perform, not to be boss, the
  22. singer had brashly told Teatro officials, "I will come, but not
  23. to sing. I want to direct." At the curtain calls, however,
  24. Pavarotti was humility itself, bowing to the audience with hands
  25. folded in front of him like a bashful schoolboy. Said the
  26. astonished star of his experience: "Technicians and singers were
  27. actually following my orders!" It helps when the director can
  28. belt one out louder than most of the cast.
